Biography

  • Born on January 19, 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey

  • Sherman received an education in visual arts at Buffalo State College 

  • Before pursuing photography, Sherman originally attended Buffalo State to focus on painting, but later became frustrated with the limitations and felt that there was nothing more for her to say through painting.

  • Sherman started photographing in the spring, for when a teacher of hers at Buffalo State was going to supposedly take their class out to a place with waterfalls and everyone would take pictures of each other messing around, and she wanted to prepare herself for this.

  • Sherman was introduced to conceptual art by Barbara Jo Revelle when she repeated a required photography class. 

  • At Buffalo State, Sherman met Robert Longo. Longo encourage Sherman to record her process of getting reading for parties. Sherman took this advice, and this began her Untitled Film Series.

  • After graduating in 1976, Sherman began focusing on  creating a unique portfolio.

  • Sherman used herself as her own model

  • Her series of photo usually took Sherman 4 years to complete and her self portraits wee not conventional.

  • Cindy Sherman's photographs created a new kind of portrait photography that professional photographers call “conceptual portrait photography."
